Do I need to be in crisis to come?
No. In fact most people who come aren't in crisis — they're just at a point where something isn't working and they're ready to look at it. You don't need to hit a wall before it's okay to ask for support. If you've been feeling flat, stuck, stretched, or disconnected for a while, that's enough.
I don't really know what I'd say. Is that a problem?
Not at all. You don't need to arrive with a prepared speech or a clear list of issues. Part of my job in the first session is to ask the kinds of questions that help you figure out what you want to say. A lot of people find the words start coming once they're in the room.
Do I need to be spiritual or believe in anything to come?
No. Everything offered at The Clearing Practice is secular — you don't need a belief system, a spiritual background, or any particular worldview. You just need to show up.
That said, the practices do have roots. Breathwork and meditation draw from Buddhist and Yogic traditions that go back thousands of years, and Nick has trained within those lineages. He holds that training with respect — but he teaches in a way that doesn't ask you to adopt any of it. What you'll find here are practical tools that work regardless of what you believe, or don't.
How do I get started?
The easiest first step is a free 15-minute Discovery Call — no commitment, no paperwork, just a conversation to see if working together makes sense. You can book directly through the website.
Choosing What’s Right for You
What's the difference between counselling, breathwork and meditation?
Three different entry points into the same work. Counselling is a conversation — we talk through what's going on, explore patterns, and build clarity and skills over time.
Breathwork is body-based — it uses structured breathing to shift your nervous system and access things that are sometimes hard to reach through talking alone.
Meditation is a practice of presence — it trains your attention, builds regulation, and creates the kind of inner quiet that makes everything else land better.
They work well together, and some people do all three. If you're not sure where to start, a free Discovery Call is the easiest way to figure it out.
What's the difference between talking to a good mate and talking to a counsellor?
A good mate is invaluable — but they also know you, have opinions about your situation, and can't help but be shaped by their own experiences. A counsellor is a different kind of relationship. There's no history, no agenda, and no judgement. The conversation is entirely about you. Most people who try counselling are surprised by how different that feels.
Do you work with women too, or just men?
I work with people of all genders. While much of what I do is shaped by an understanding of men's experience, The Clearing Practice is open to anyone who feels it's the right fit.
What to Expect
How many sessions will I need?
There's no fixed answer. Some people come with a specific focus and feel ready to finish after six to eight sessions. Others find the work opens into something longer. We'll check in regularly on how things are going and you'll always have a say in the pace and direction.
What if I don't feel comfortable, or it's not working?
Tell me. I'd rather you be honest than sit through sessions that aren't useful. If the fit isn't right, I'll do my best to help you find someone who suits you better. There's no pressure to continue.
What if I get emotional?
That's okay. It happens, and it doesn't mean anything has gone wrong. You're not expected to hold it together in here. If anything, the sessions where something real comes up tend to be the most useful ones.
Practical Details
Is everything I say confidential?
Yes — with a small number of exceptions. What you share stays between us unless there is a serious and immediate risk to your safety or someone else's, or a legal obligation requires disclosure. These situations are rare. At our first session I'll explain confidentiality in full, and you'll have the opportunity to ask any questions.
Do you offer Medicare rebates?
Not currently. As an ACA-registered counsellor, sessions are not covered by Medicare. Some private health funds provide partial rebates for counselling — it's worth checking your policy. If cost is a concern, please reach out — I offer a limited number of concession-rate appointments.
Can I do sessions online?
Yes. Telehealth sessions work well for both counselling and breathwork. You'll receive a link before the session. All you need is a private space and a reliable internet connection.
